Refrigerator Not Cooling? 7 Things to Check Before You Call
A warm fridge is stressful, and your food is on the clock. Before you call, a few easy checks can sometimes fix the problem, or at least tell you what is wrong. This guide walks you through them in plain words. If food is at risk right now, call us at (708) 840-0993 for same-day and emergency help, 24 hours a day.

Why a Warm Fridge Is Urgent
Food safety is the first worry. According to USDA guidance, an unopened fridge keeps food cold for about four hours during a power loss. Cold food should stay at 40°F or below, and perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than two hours should be thrown away. A full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours if the door stays closed, and a half-full one for about 24 hours.
So the first step is simple: keep the doors shut. Every time you open the door, warm air rushes in. If the fridge stays warm, move milk, meat and other key items into a cooler with ice.
How Your Fridge Makes Cold
Your fridge does not create cold air. It moves heat out of the box. The compressor pushes a cooling liquid through the condenser coils, where heat leaves. The liquid then flows through the evaporator coil inside the freezer, where it soaks up heat. A fan blows that cold air around, and a thermostat tells the system when to start and stop.
If one part in this chain fails, the whole fridge can warm up. That is why a fridge can run all day and still feel warm. Knowing the chain helps you understand the checks below.
7 Things to Check Before You Call
1. The Temperature Setting
Fridges work best near 37 to 40°F, and freezers near 0°F. A bumped dial, a child, or a power surge can change the setting. Turn it back to the middle setting and wait several hours before you judge the result. Turning the dial to the coldest setting does not fix a broken part, and it can freeze your lettuce.
2. Power to the Fridge
Make sure the plug is fully in and the outlet works. Plug in a small lamp to test it. Check your breaker panel too. If the light inside the fridge is out and nothing hums, the fridge may have no power at all.
3. The Door Seal
Close the door on a dollar bill. If the bill slides out with no pull, the seal may be weak at that spot. Look for cracks, tears or dirt on the rubber. Wipe the seal with warm soapy water. A leaky seal lets warm air in all day, which makes the fridge work harder and ice build up.
4. Airflow Inside
Cold air has to move between the freezer and the fridge. If boxes or bags block the vents, the fridge side gets warm even though the freezer is cold. Leave a little space around the vents and keep food away from the back wall.
5. Dirty Condenser Coils
Dust and pet hair on the coils trap heat. Unplug the fridge first. Then use a coil brush and a vacuum on the coils at the back or under the front grille. Do this once or twice a year. Clean coils help the fridge cool better and last longer.
6. The Fans
Most modern fridges have a fan near the coils and another in the freezer. With the fridge running, listen for a soft whirr. A silent fan, or one that rattles, can stop cold air from reaching the food. Fan motors are one of the more common parts we replace.
7. Frost Buildup
A thick layer of frost on the freezer back wall can block airflow. It often means the defrost system is not working, or the door has been left open. Turning the fridge off to melt the ice may give you short-term relief, but the frost often returns if a part has failed.
Match the Symptom to the Likely Cause
Here is a quick guide. It is not a diagnosis, but it shows how technicians think.
- Freezer cold, fridge warm: often a fan, an air damper or the defrost system.
- Both warm and silent: check power first, then a control or a start part.
- Both warm and humming: dirty coils or a weak compressor.
- Clicking every few minutes: often a failing start relay.
- Running nonstop: dirty coils, a leaky seal or a weak part.
- Water on the floor: often a clogged defrost drain or water line.
Things That Do Not Help
- Overfilling the fridge so air cannot move.
- Putting hot food in right away, which raises the inside temperature.
- Taking the cover off the back and poking around, which is unsafe.
- Adding baking soda or ice trays and hoping for the best.
What a Technician Will Do
When you book a visit, the technician starts the same way you did, but with tools. They measure the temperature in both sections, check the coils, fans, seals and drain, and test the electrical parts. They then explain the cause and the price before any repair begins. Many fixes are done in one visit if the part is available.
Our refrigerator service page lists the problems we fix and how we work. If the freezer is the main issue, see freezer repair.
Keep Your Fridge Healthy
- Clean the coils once or twice a year.
- Wipe door seals every few months.
- Do not overload shelves or block vents.
- Set the fridge near 37°F and the freezer near 0°F.
- Do not store the fridge against a hot wall or in direct sun.
Repair or Replace?
If your fridge is old and keeps breaking, replacing it can make sense. If it is under about ten years old and the fault is one part, repair is usually a better deal. We wrote a full guide on this: repair or replace your appliance.
How to Clean the Coils, Step by Step
- Unplug the fridge. Never clean the coils while it is plugged in.
- Find the coils. On many fridges they are behind the bottom front grille. On others they are on the back panel.
- Remove the grille by gently pulling it off, or open the back cover if your manual allows it.
- Use a soft coil brush to loosen dust and pet hair.
- Vacuum the dust with a brush attachment.
- Replace the grille, plug the fridge in and give it several hours to cool.
This job takes about fifteen minutes and can make a real difference. Homes with pets often need it more than twice a year.
A Real-World Example
A family calls us on a hot afternoon. The freezer is cold, but the milk in the fridge is warm. They have already moved food to a cooler, which was the right call. The technician finds a thick layer of frost on the back wall of the freezer, which blocked the air that flows to the fridge side. The cause is a failed defrost heater. The tech replaces it, clears the ice, and the fridge cools down by the next morning. The key lesson is that a cold freezer and a warm fridge usually point to an airflow or defrost problem, not a dead compressor.
What to Tell Us When You Call
- The brand and the model number, usually on a label inside the fridge.
- Which side is warm, the fridge, the freezer or both.
- Any sounds, such as clicking, buzzing or silence.
- Whether you see ice, frost or water.
- How long it has been warm.

Questions
FAQs
How long can food stay in a fridge without power?
About four hours if you keep the doors closed, according to USDA guidance. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours, and a half-full one for about 24.
What temperature should my fridge be?
Aim for 40°F or below. Many people set it near 37°F. The freezer should be near 0°F.
Is it safe to unplug my fridge to clean the coils?
Yes. Unplug it first, clean the coils gently, then plug it back in. Wait several hours for it to cool fully.
Why is my fridge running but not cooling?
Common causes are dirty coils, a failed fan, a frozen evaporator coil or a weak start part. A technician can test each one.
How soon should I call a technician?
Call right away if food is at risk, there is water leaking, or the fridge makes loud clicking and does not start.
